Is your video structured like a song?

“Just like a Nirvana song.”

I told the Director of Photography that when he asked me what the feel of the video we would be working on together was.

This was the first time the DP and I worked on a project I was directing and producing, so we were trying to get a feel for each other’s styles when he asked me that question.

I told him this project was going to flow like a Nirvana song. You remember “Smells like Teen Spirit”? I don’t care who you are; you can’t listen to that song and not get excited about how it starts so fast and amped up and then quickly drops back to a super slow pace until the chorus, where it ramps up again.

That’s how this is going to go.

– We would have long 5-10 second B roll shots, then eight half-second shots that will transition us to the next scene.
– We are going to mix between wide and close-up.
– Music to silence.
– 5 different sound design tracks running at once, giving it a rich feeling, then suddenly cut down to just 1.

These techniques have taken years to master, but they are what really makes a video enjoyable and helps hook the viewer into continuing to watch.

If your organization’s videos have the same pacing and feel bland, reach out to DNAFILMCO and me. We can discuss how to make your videos more enjoyable and exciting and help tell your story in a more engaging way.
